What age can a child start playing golf?

Children can start at two or three if golf means rolling a ball at a target. What starting should look like at every age, and what matters more than the birthday.

Children can start golf as young as two or three, as long as "golf" at that age means rolling a ball at a target rather than a round of eighteen holes. The useful question is not how young they can start, but what starting should look like at each age.

Ages 2 to 3: play, not golf

At this age a child is learning to hold something and swing it. Sessions last minutes, not hours. What works:

    • A light putter and a soft ball on a carpet.
    • A bucket, a hoop or a chalk circle as the target.
    • Lots of turns, no instruction.

Equipment should be light enough to hold with one hand without effort. Our Spark Putter was built for exactly this stage.

Ages 3 to 5: the first real clubs

This is where children start hitting a ball rather than pushing it, and where properly sized equipment begins to matter. Most children in this band are between 85 and 110 cm, which is the range our sets for ages 3 to 5 cover.

Three clubs are plenty: a putter, one iron and a driver. That covers the whole journey through a hole and keeps the bag light enough to carry. Sessions of fifteen to thirty minutes, on grass or a mat, with a target they can hit often enough to feel good about it.

Club weight decides most of the experience at this age. Details in how we choose the weight of every club.

Ages 6 to 8: first lessons and first holes

Attention spans stretch, and group lessons start to make sense. Most clubs run junior programmes from around this age. National federations list them: the Royal Belgian Golf Federation, the Dutch golf federation NGF and the Swedish Golf Federation all publish junior pathways, and the R&A supports the same stage based approach internationally.

This is usually where a child moves into standard junior equipment and adds a wedge or a second iron.

Ages 9 and up: structure, if they want it

Handicaps, competitions and coaching all become available. Plenty of excellent players start here and catch up quickly, so an older beginner is not behind.

    What matters more than age

Height. Every sizing decision should follow height rather than birthday. Two five year olds can be 15 cm apart. Measure with our size guide.

Session length. Stop while they still want one more turn. That is the whole trick.

Whether they can hit it. A club that is too heavy or too long means a ball that does not move, and a child who decides golf is not for them. Everything else is secondary.

Whether it feels like theirs. Their own bag, their own colours, their own club. It sounds like decoration. It is most of the motivation at four years old.

Do they need lessons to start?

No. At three to five, a parent, a soft ball and a target in the garden is a better introduction than a lesson. Formal coaching becomes useful once they can repeat a swing and want to get better at it.

Wondering whether your child is ready for real clubs? Measure them first. If they land between 85 and 110 cm, our club sets for ages 3 to 5 are built for that stage, and you can always ask us through the contact page.
