US Kids Golf vs WOOW: which first set for a 3 to 5 year old?

If you have searched for a first golf set for a small child, you have met US Kids Golf. It is one of the best known junior brands in Europe and in many countries it is the brand a pro shop stocks. WOOW is an Antwerp based brand built for one narrow group: children between roughly 85 and 110 cm, which is most three to five year olds.

Disclosure: WOOW makes and sells one of the two sets discussed here, so read this as a guide to the questions worth asking rather than as a verdict. Every statement about another brand below describes what you should check for yourself. The short version

• US Kids Golf publishes a full junior range that covers the whole junior journey, from a first set up to teenagers playing competitions, fitted across many height steps.
• WOOW covers the very start only: one size band, three clubs, a bag a small child carries, and a design language aimed at children rather than at miniature adults.
• If your child is taller than about 110 cm, or already plays on a course regularly, a full junior range is the better fit.
• If your child is three, four or five and has never held a club, the questions below matter more than the badge on the shaft.

The five questions that decide it

1. Is it sized by height?

Both brands size by height rather than by age, which is what the coaching guidance from golf's governing bodies also recommends. The R&A and national federations such as the Royal Belgian Golf Federation, the Dutch golf federation NGF and the Swedish Golf Federation all run junior programmes built around a child's size and stage rather than their birthday.

2. How heavy is each club?

This is where first sets differ most and where specifications are hardest to find. A young child swings slowly, so a heavy head pulls them off balance and they learn to hit with their arms instead of turning their body.

WOOW publishes the weight of every club: driver 210 g, putter 250 g, iron 7 270 g. If a brand does not publish weights, ask them, or weigh the set on a kitchen scale when it arrives. We explain our own testing in how we choose the weight of every club.

3. How many clubs does a beginner need?

Larger junior ranges offer sets of five, six or seven clubs, and for a growing child who plays regularly that makes sense. For a first year, three is usually plenty: something to putt with, something to hit off the ground, something to hit far. More clubs mean a heavier bag a small child may not carry, and choices they cannot yet make. WOOW ships three clubs and a bag for that reason.

4. Can the child carry the bag themselves?

Carrying their own bag is a lot of what makes a three year old feel like a golfer. Check the empty bag weight and whether the straps adjust small enough. This is easy to overlook online and obvious within an hour of the first round.

5. Where does it ship from, and where do returns go?

US Kids Golf is a US company with European distribution, so the retailer you buy from decides your delivery time, your return address and who pays the return postage. Check that at checkout rather than assuming it. WOOW ships from Belgium within the EU with a 14 day return window and no customs paperwork inside the union. Read the small print on whichever you choose, because a return to another continent can cost more than the difference in price.
